Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
