Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
